  • Seam carving, the new resizing and crop?

I ran into something interesting today as I was looking on the interwebs. a technique called seam carving, which is a algorithm that resizes and crops in a intelligent way.
it looks at which parts in the image are important and which parts contain less useful information and it scales(removes) that part of the image while preserving the important parts.
examples and source after the jump

but I could talk about this in a lengthy way but i think its best shown with some example video’s:

(one of the example’s with explanation how it works)

(example with seam carving in a Photoshop plugin)
    Photoshop plugin site

if your like damn I want to try this straight away after seeing those video’s, well your in luck there is a sit with a nifty flex application that allows you to do it online

rsizr (yes one of those annoying web 2.0 name’s..)

and if after trying that your like I want to make that to well your in luck seeing as there is a Actionscript 3 source available
that you can use to make your own seam carving applications here

the seam carving academic paper (pdf)

also, the good doctor is now hired by Adobe so yay for the next adobe Photoshop that might include this nice feature.
